In addition to adding text formatting elements to your text to help your reader gain information, adding images is another important way to improve your communication. |
√ Typing Games - 5 minutes √ Formatting Use Google Docs File New Document and paste [(Apple C (copy) then Apple V (paste)] this text into a new text document.
Use different font, text sizes, bold, italic, colors, and •lists, to make text more meaningful. Text visuals help the reader to better understand the meaning of the words How to Be a Success in Middle School The middle school years are said to be the toughest of your life. Steps Check what you have for homework from the teacher or a reliable friend. Making friends is also good. Make sure you have the assignment and any needed materials to be used in getting the homework done. Such as pencils, pens, papers, etc. Try to pay attention. Take notes while listening at the same time. Carefully listening while your teacher is going over information is a bonus and guaranteed to have a nice outcome. Notes should be legible and organized so you can study them later. Learn to learn from all types of teaching. Take the best notes you can, because you will need them for tests. Good notes consist of: readable penmanship, descriptive details, formulas (if you're in a math or science class), and dates and location of where important events happened. Most of the time, if you outline your notes they'll be easier to understand when you go home to study them. Make sure they’re neat and legible. Presentation of your notes on the paper should be clean and perfect. Decorate your locker to fit you. It's your little estate that you use as a vacation between classes. Don't be afraid to ask questions when you don't understand a concept or directions. Teachers like kids who do this. Stay after school for tutoring if needed. Take advantage of all the help you can get! DON'T FORGET TO MAKE FRIENDS AND TRY NOT TO BE AKWARD! :) Tips Be honest. If you don't have your homework, immediately tell your teacher. It'll be less embarrassing than telling him/her in front of the whole class. Be nice to every kid, and they'll be nice back. Don't go out making trouble for yourself. Just be yourself! It'll work out better that way. Don't skip class. You shouldn't care what other people think (much) so shrug it off. If you have trouble finishing your homework or focusing, then reward yourself when you get it all done and put away. Your homework is never complete until it is checked and put away ready for tomorrow. Every fifteen minutes take a three to five minute break. A human only has a fifteen to twenty minute attention span .Warnings If you do get caught skipping class or cheating on a test, don't try to lie your way out of it. Tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Do not put tape or glue on your locker. After a year, that stuff will not come off! Don't reward yourself if you have committed something. Make sure you have all 3 topics= Steps, Tips, and Warning. Your document should include a header, subhead, section heads of above topics, bolded words in each bullet in your lists. When you are done, have your neighbor check it then take your cup off and let me look at it for grading.

√ Typing Games - 5 minutes √ About Me Page Please answer the following questions to place on your digital portfolio. Open your Google Doc and go to sites. Create a new page named "About Me". Paste the following questions on this page. Use your formatting skills to make it more readable. Add images to give your reader more information. Find images on the Internet of your favorite singer, book, car. Drag them to your desktop. Watch this video to learn how to INSERT images to your site.
Save changes. HI, I'm ----------------------------- age, grade, Here is a bit of info about me:
If I could go anywhere in the world it would be: I live with______________________ My life is______________________ My room looks like ___________________ When I grow up I plan to _____________________ Other cool things about me :
√ Formatting page -Create a new page on your website called Formatting. Copy and paste your formatting document onto this page. At the top place a sentence or two about how formatting helps the reader understand the content better. This is called visual literacy.
√ Internet Safety - A word on using the Internet. The Federal Government has mandated that all schools use Internet filtering programs. It is very unlikely that you will ever run into a web site with porn or other undesirable information from school. If you do, immediately use the Apple key (command) and letter Q together. This will make your browser program quit. Tell the teacher and she will look into how this site got through the filter. You will not be in trouble. Several sites are blocked by our district filter. If you find blocked sites while looking for images, go to others. You might try Google Image search. All images must be appropriate for a school.
√ Photobooth images Use the computer program called Photobooth to create 5 images of yourself and you with classmates for your portfolio.
Practice using some of the filters on Photobooth. Save the images you like to your desktop by dragging them to your desktop.
If you have a computer that does not have a build in camera, share with a classmate and use the flash drive to transfer your images to your own computer. Place 3 of these images on your "About me" page and one to your Home page. Go to your Google web site,
Great first week! Good work.
